Reality TV star Jade Goody has spent her first night on the Indian version of Celebrity Big Brother.

It comes 18 months after the 27-year-old was accused of racism towards Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in the UK show.

Goody told Indian audiences before she went in to the house the incident with Shetty was "in the past" and that she was "not proud of it".

Shetty takes Davina McCall's role on the Indian show, known as Bigg Boss.

"I know I have behaved wrongly but that was my yesterday," Goody said.

"Today, I have changed for the better and I am here to prove it. I am determined to be myself and win everyone's heart."

So far on the show, Goody has learnt Hindi phrases and Bollywood-style dancing.

As the only non-Indian contestant and first international celebrity on the show, Goody is immune from nominations this week as a mark of hospitality.

Last year's British show attracted 45,000 complaints to media regulator Ofcom over the alleged bullying of Shetty by Jade Goody and fellow contestants, model Danielle Lloyd and singer Jo O'Meara.

It also led to a protest in the eastern Indian city of Patna which saw the burning of an effigy.

A month after leaving the house, Goody visited India and told the Indian community: "I am sorry for the hurt and pain that my actions caused."

Mumbai: Around 200 feature and short fiction films from around 40 countries are to be screened at this year's Osian Film Festival.

Filmmaker Mrinal Sen and author and screenplay writer Jose "Pete" F. Lacaba from the Philippines received the Lifetime Achievement Awards for their contribution to cinema and writing respectively during the grand opening of the Tenth Osian's-Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema.

The two received the awards from Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee respectively in the presence of Osian's Connoisseurs of Art chairman Neville Tuli, Festival joint directors Latika Padgaonkar and Indu Shrikent, and festival founder Aruna Vasudev.

Sen said in his acceptance speech that he was receiving the award with quiet dignity. This was because he felt that he could still do a lot more to justify the honours bestowed on him.

Lacaba said after receiving the Aruna Vasudev Lifetime Achiement Award that it was very rare for a script writer to get acknowledged for his work, since the credit for a film went either to the director or the stars.

Members of the six juries were also presented to the audience during the ceremony. Three audio-visuals were shown on the occasion, on Osian's, the Mumbai festival last month, and on actor Shammi Kapoor who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award in Mumbai.

The opening of the festival at Sirirfort auditorium also marked the formal handing over of the responsibility of running of the festival by Vasudev, who had functioned as director until last year, to the two new Joint Directors.

Dikshit, who has been associated with the festival since its inception in 1999, declared the Festival open. She paid a tribute to Vasudev for running the festival until now and said she was confident it would grow from strength to strength.

In his welcome address, Tuli said the need today was to venture out into new projects without being too worried about the results, if the conviction was there. Paying a tribute to Vasudev, he said it was this conviction, which made her join up with him for this festival. Introducing the concept of Osianama film complex in Mumbai, he said there was need to synthesize art and cinema to give them respectability.

In the programme compeered by actor Rajat Kapur, Tuli presented Vasudev with a shawl as a mark of respect.

Vasudev said when she had launched the 'Cinemaya', the world's first film quarterly on Asian cinema in 1988 people had been skeptical. She later launched the Cinefan Film Festival of Asian Cinema in 1999 on a meager budget of Rs 600,000 given by the Delhi Government. Joining hands with Osian's did not mean a surrender of independence, but the coming together of minds.

The two joint directors, Padgaonkar and Shrikent, said the festival was expected to raise awareness about the best in Asian and Arab cinema. They said the Festival now has a new look and a new feel with several sections being introduced for the first time.

The awards for the films will be presented during the Festival being held at Siri Fort complex and Alliance Francaise in New Delhi from 10 - 20 July. The award money this year would be over Rs One Crore for the Competition Sections and Lifetime Achievement Awards. The winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award were presented Rs. 800,000 each.

The music of Farhan Akhtar’s acting plus singing debut ‘Rock On’ was launched on Monday at the Inifinity Mall in Andheri. The evening was marked by some truly rocking performances by the talented musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Farhan Akhtar.

Kicking off the evening, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's power packed performance left everyone craving for more. And soon the audience went crazy when Farhan Akhtar himself set the stage on fire two foot-tapping numbers from the movie, in his amazing rock star look. Farhan’s father Javed Akhtar, formally released the album at the live concert. The famous lyricist has also written the songs for son’s movie.

‘Rock On’ is about four members of a band who reunite after going their separate ways. The cast of the film includes Purab Kohli, Shahana Goswami and Luke Kenny along with Arjun Rampal and junior Farhan. Rock star Farhan plays the lead singer and sings a whopping five out of nine songs in the film.

Farhan’s ‘Rock On’ is slated for release in August.

Love Story had a 30-40% opening and is likely to sink without a trace. It has not done well even in the over seas market.

While Jaane Tu..a small budget flick will earn big, Love Story 2050 will recover only half of its 50 crore budget.

“There are many positives for Jaane Tu…. The music, its youthful freshness and then the way Aamir promoted the film was also one big factor for the film’s success. Moreover, the film looked real. People could relate to the story whereas Love Story 2050 story was so fake. Mumbai in 2008 has so many problems, how can we have flying cars by 2050?” says veteran analyst Taran Adarsh

The romance in Jaane Tu is light, touching and breezy while that in Love Story is without a heart and lost in the special effects.

Rishi Kapoor earlier played the role of Saif's father in Hum Tum.A film like Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic makes you nostalgic. It takes you back to the light-hearted, feel-good cinema made by directors of calibre like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. The focus was on narrating a simple story. A movie that put a smile on your face even if you walked in with a frown.With the sinking of Tashan and Yash Chopra himself taking over the reins of the Yash Raj Films banner, immense pressure rides on Kunal and the entire force at YRF.While glancing through the promos, you would expect this film to be a kiddie film or just yet another glamour speckled film with Rani, Saif and Rishi Kapoor-all from 'Hum Tum'. MUMBAI: After playing an angel in "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic", actress Rani Mukerji is all set to do another unconventional role - she plays a cricketer in Yash Raj Films' next venture and is busy practising on the field!

"I don't know if any actress has played a cricketer before. But I'm playing one for sure. In fact, I've been learning cricket regularly on the field for the past two months. I can most certainly play the game convincingly now, though not as good as professionals yet. It's a very big challenge for me," Rani told IANS from her swanky new home here.

So is she equipped to join the Indian Premier League now (IPL) now?

"I don't know about that. But I'm definitely enjoying it. My practical sessions are on in full swing."

She will also for the first time be paired opposite Shahid Kapur in the film that will be directed by debutant Anurag Singh.

Rani says she is hungry for new roles. "At this stage of my career I feel I need new challenges. When Kunal Kohli offered me an angel's role, I was kicked. I don't now of any actress who has played an angel before.

"Also, for the first time I was playing a character who couldn't cry. Now they can stop saying Rani cries so much in all her films. It was pretty cool to play a character who actually doesn't know how to cry and who had to fly around like Hrithik (Roshan) in 'Krrish'."

Being suspended on a harness, she says, was not easy.

"It required a lot of physical strength to assume the correct 'flying' posture on the harness. I guess it'd be equally difficult for me to look convincing as a cricketer. But I'm glad to be doing work with challenges."

So is she ok working with a first-time director?

"It isn't as if I haven't worked with new directors before. I was in Shaad Ali's first film 'Saathiya', remember? And Kunal Kohli started his career with me in 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge'," she quipped.

After an angel and a cricketer what would Rani like to play?

"Maybe an astronaut like Kalpana Chawla. And I'd also love to play a doctor. I've never done that before. Come to think of it I've never worked with Shahid Kapur before either. I'm doing so now."

"Why? Wasn't 'Saawariya' with Sanjay Leela Bhansali? And if Yash Raj is making some of the best films in our country why should I keep out just because people are talking?

MUMBAI: Item numbers are in vogue but Yash Raj Films' blue-eyed director Kunal Kohli doesn't approve of them and says using the term "item" for an actress is derogatory.
"I don't believe in item numbers. Neither do I believe in item girls. How can you call a girl 'item'? It sounds so cheap. It is humiliating," said Kohli.
"I am not against the performance, but the term used for it. Let people use the term, but I will never call any song in my film an item number," he added.
After carving a niche for himself with his previous films "Hum Tum" and "Fanaa", the director returns to the marquee with "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic".
Starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, the film's story revolves around four orphaned children and has elements of magic, love and fun, but no item songs.
Although Kohli has roped in Amisha Patel for a song, he says it is not an item number.
"My film doesn't have item numbers. It has special performance by Amisha Patel, but she is not just doing a song, she also has a very important role in the film."

Mumbai: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan is enjoying his blogging experience and 'the ugly abuses, the healthy criticism' that come along with it. The Bollywood icon has clarified that his remarks about Shah Rukh Khan's quiz show on his blog were misinterpreted by the media and he has apologised to the actor since then.


"I narrated on my blog what transpired during one my meetings with TV heads, who had come with proposals to me to do a show for them. I asked them questions on the viability of game shows. They described to me the falling ratings, which included shows done by me and by others as well," Amitabh, who is currently in Cannes with his family, explained in a telephone interview with IANS.

He added: "I merely transferred these talks to my blog purely to seek opinion, not glory, and the next thing I read is that it is an attempt on my part to show Shah Rukh in poor light, which was entirely incorrect and a load of rubbish. I have since, on my blog, apologised to Shah Rukh and those offended by this wrong assumption. I will apologise to Shah Rukh a hundred times if there is an iota of doubt in his mind about my conduct and behaviour towards him."

On visiting Cannes, he said the family was there to be with daughter-in-law Aishwarya, who is a brand ambassador of L'Oreal, and to spend quality time with one another.

"We went to the opening with her (Aishwarya) and a few films together, but mostly it is to be with family because we've all been away from each other for a long time in different parts of the world. It's lovely to just be together and catch up, before we drift away to our respective schedules," Amitabh said.

Are you in Cannes? Are you representing a film?

Yes I am in Cannes and with the family. This is a private visit and there are no films I am representing. I believe there was an article criticising us for not visiting the India pavilion. Well, firstly, this is a private visit and moreover, no one has invited us. And secondly, I am a little wary of government invitations. They invite you to be chief guest at a function and when you arrive there, tell you are not invited.

We are here to be with Aishwarya, who is here in an official capacity as brand ambassador for L'Oreal. We went to the opening with her and a few films together, but mostly it is to be with family because we've all been away from each other for a long time in different parts of the world. It's lovely to just be together and catch up before we drift away to our respective schedules.

How satisfying has the experience of blogging been so far?

It has been a most wonderful experience and I have wondered why this was not known to me earlier. The speed of communication the world over, the responses to my thoughts, the adulation and endearment expressed by well-wishers, the ugly abuses, the healthy criticism, the demand for more on my father's works all of it has been educative and awe-inspiring. It has been like talking to each one of them personally.

Is it very time consuming?

It is time consuming because I read all the messages myself and I write my blog personally too. I have not permitted the server to allow comments to go through a 'moderator' because I want a fair, democratic approach to be practised. To cope with this I sleep a little less perhaps to make time for those who write.

You seem to have become far more frank and forthright, far less diplomatic than you used to be.

Maybe. I think it comes from the knowledge that what you write or express has the ability to go to the reader without dilution or moderation. The absence of the middleman helps in the purity of my output. I try to be as honest as I can in my outpouring and yes they may seem to be more frank and forthright and less diplomatic.

As I spoke in my last blog of Day 28(i), words and expressions can get twisted and misinterpreted and can cause unwanted hurt or a misunderstanding. A twisted thought could create an avalanche of negativity I would hate that to happen and whenever it has, I have not hesitated to tender an apology or to correct myself if I have done wrong.

Your comments on Shah Rukh's TV show have been discussed widely. Do you feel your comments could've had an impact that perhaps exceeded your intentions?

Matter containing my father's works will be prominently displayed. His repertoire is vast and of immense literary value and I wish to give it its pride of place.

It's being said in a section of the press that the blog is a commercial enterprise and that you're being paid a hefty amount to keep it interesting.

I repeat here again that the blog is not a commercial venture and I have not been paid this ridiculous amount of money to write it. I am merely using the facility of the server provided by bigadda.com to carry my blog.

The Cannes Film Festival has a big place in the heart of the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The Bollywood actress' first time at Cannes was to promote the lavish love story Devdaas in 2002. The Bride and Prejudice star attended last year's French Riviera festival soon after her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan .


“Last time, I got married just a month before so it was very special to be back here,'' she told a news agency at Cannes on Wednesday. ``It was literally like a reception welcome.''

About a year into married life, the former Miss World says she recommends it.

``I think what's fantastic is when you have this incredible friendship with your man,'' she said.

``I think that's what really holds real, and that's the best part of us together. I mean of course there's the love and all of that, but I won't get into those clichés with all of you.''

For the moment, she'd rather keep quiet about her plans to start a family.

``I'm a normal girl just like anybody else ... it will happen when it has to happen,'' she said.

``It isn't something that you write in a diary, but when it has to be it will definitely be, and yeah, looking forward to it as and when, but no speculations right now, please.''

Ash, who will appear with Steve Martin in next year's The Pink Panther 2 walked down Cannes' red carpet on Wednesday in her role as a model for L'Oreal.

Mumbai (PTI): Reliance BIG Entertainment, the media and entertainment arm of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) group, has finalised a slate of 69 films in nine languages for production and distribution over the next two years.

The films include those in collaboration with India's leading production houses and Reliance's own in-house films. Amongst the prominent deals include -two film deal with Vidhu Vinod Chopra including a mainstream English language film "Broken Horses", a six-film deal with Excel Entertainment promoted by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani including Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Don II".

There is also a two-film deal with director Shyam Benegal, four film deal with Madhur Bhandarkar, three film deal with Vivek Agnihotri and two film deal with Sudhir Mishra, Amit Khanna, chairman of Reliance BIG Entertainment, said in a statement issued here today.

Khanna said Reliance ADA group has 106 operating cinema screens at present and it is expected to go up to 400 by the end of the calender year 2009.

Earlier this year, the group made its foray into the US exhibition market and has expanded its film exhibition presence across India, Malaysia and Mauritius.

Out of the total films, those in post production stage are "Rock On", "Sarkar Raj", "Love Story 2050", "Pathshala", Tamil film "Yaavaram Nallam", "Hulla", "Summer 2007", Punjabi film "Mera Pind", "Shabri".

Films in production stage are "Luck By Chance","Daddy Cool", "Singh is King", "Sultan-the Warrior", "Dulha Mil Gaya", "Sikander" and animation film "Hey Krishna".
