Guru which most consider your finest performance to date came at the start of 2007. Do you think it's forgotten at the awards at the end of the year?

Why do you say that? Rang De Basanti had also been released in January. Awards are no doubt very encouraging. But there have been many notable films in the past that haven't won awards. At the end of the day, the greatest award is a successful film.

One chooses a film because it seems interesting, not to see how many awards it will finally get. Guru was an acclaimed and successful film. It's one of the biggest hits of 2007.

Are you more possessive about Sarkar Raj than Jodhaa Akbar since the former stars you with your wife?
No. At the end of the day I am an actor. And we're both thoroughly professional. It would be incorrect for me to be possessive about our film together. I am both an actor and her husband. I'm possessive about her, not her films. It doesn't matter whom she works with. In fact, I really like her pairing with Duggu. I think they looked good together in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. I wish that pair all the best.

Interestingly the first and second turning points in your career were both courtesy Mani Ratnam?
Yes, Yuva and Guru. Mani is very special. He had faith in me at a time when most people had lost faith, including myself. He's a friend and mentor. I hope I never let him down. I'd love to work again and again with him. He knows I'm only a phone call away. According to me, he's one of the most talented directors we've ever had. Mani is very reserved. If he has another film for me he would tell me when he's ready.

You went through a prolonged lean phase at the beginning of your career?
During the times when my films were flopping I had friends like Karan Johar who kept my morale high. I can't deny access to the industry was easier because you are a Bachchan. And I guess I did have it much easier than many people. But once you get a chance you've to prove yourself just like anybody else. I had to struggle. I almost gave up after seventeen failures. My father kept saying, just keep working and believe in yourself. Thankfully, better days were around the corner. You've to work very hard to get anywhere in this business. And I'm working hard. However, there's no formula for success. When I decided to do Guru, a lot of my friends thought it wouldn't work at all. By the grace of God it did well.

Are you pleased with your assignments?
Of course! How wonderful to be working at a time when an actor gets to do a Sarkar Raj, Drona and Dilli 6 during the same year. It's a dream come true for any actor.

Why did you initially opt out of Dilli 6?
Rakeysh Mehra mentioned the subject to me many years ago. He finally decided to shoot it in winter 2006 when I was committed to shooting Drona. I suggested he do it with someone else. He asked Duggu who asked me if it was okay. I was perfectly okay with that. But then Duggu's dates didn't work out. Then Rakeysh decided to re-write the script. By then it was December 2007 and I was thankfully able to do the film. The rest, I hope will be history. Rakeysh is a very sensitive director and I love working with him. I was meant to start my career with him.

How has the experience in Jaipur been so far?
It's like attending acting school every morning. When would I again get an opportunity to observe and work with actors like Waheeda Rehmanji, Chintu Uncle(Rishi Kapoor), Om Puriji, Deepak Dobriyal, Pawan Malhotra,, Vijay Raaz, Atul Kulkarni, K.K Raina….It's school! It's cool!!

Both you and dad are huge fans of Waheedaji?
Who isn't? This is my second film with her after Om Jai Jagdish. I just keep staring at her. Actors would do anything to be in one frame with her.

And what about your co-star Sonam Kapoor?
I saw Saawariya and thought she was wonderful. When I started my career I wasn't half as good as Sonam or Ranbir. It's wonderful to see this whole eager enthusiastic new generation coming in.

Reports flooding the electronic media that Shah Rukh Khan is extremely upset with the Roshans refuse to upset the Roshans.

Laughs Rakesh Roshan, "We know what the truth is. In fact, I met Shah Rukh at an awards function the other day. We both laughed over these reports. Maybe a section of the media thinks it knows better. But Shah Rukh, Hrithik and I are above these attempts to create a rift between us. The fact of the matter is, it was Hrithik's idea to approach Shah Rukh for the dance number. Why would he suddenly feel threatened by Shah Rukh?"

Rakesh Roshan will say no more on this subject. But a source very close to the Roshans adds, "From the very start when Shah Rukh was roped in to do one version of the Krazzy 4 song, Hrithik had gone on- record to state that Shah Rukh's version of the number will be used as a part of the film. Hrithik who at that time couldn't perform the item song because of a bad knee had explained the situation to Shah Rukh. He had also stated clearly that whenever Hrithik is able to perform after his knee injury, his version of the item song will be used for promotional purposes. And rightly so…the song is composed by his uncle and is part of Hrithik's home production. It's his sister Sunayana's first attempt at a producer and Hrithik is very proud of her and the film. So why should Shah Rukh be miffed with the Roshans?"

The fact that Shah Rukh doesn't have the time or the inclination to correct the blatantly mischievous perception on the two-tiered item song only adds to the confusion.

Bachchan goes all the way

Amitabh Bachchan is quite busy these days but it is quite surprising to see that in spite of his hectic film schedules, Bachchan is busy in promoting Ravi Chopra’s much delayed film Bhoothnath. After unveiling the first look of Bhoothnath he has given most of his time for its promotion. He was part of a smartly planned promotion of Bhoothnath with Amul Star Voice of India Chhote Ustad as the film talks about his relationship with a kid. Bachchan shot for the promo of Amul Star Voice of India Chhote Ustad grand finale. Not just that he was also present with the cast and crew of Bhoothnath at the grand finale event that happened in last week. Though Bachchan hosted a big game show KBC on television, this is for the first time that he is promoting his film through any television show. A unit hand informs that Amitabh is going all the way to promote his long stuck movie Bhoothnath. “He was present with the complete team of Bhoothnath . He was there till the end of the show. Since Shah Rukh who has done a guest appearance in the film, will not be part of the promotion. Thus the complete responsibility of promotion is on Bachchan’s shoulder.” It is believed that Bachchan is dedicatedly helping out his director friend’s film which was stuck for due to unavailability of SRK and Bachchan’s dates. But now when the film is complete and all set to release in May, he is putting all his efforts to promote it.

Mumbai, April 7 (IANS) In an apparent attempt to take the wind out of his detractors’ sails, superstar Amitabh Bachchan Monday expressed gratitude to Maharashtra, saying the state has “given me so much in the last 40 years - my wife, my children and so much love…..Jai Maharashtra”.

Speaking in chaste Marathi on the newly launched IBN-Lokmat Marathi news channel, Bachchan said he owes a lot to Maharashtra in whose capital his film career has blossomed.

Switching to Hindi after winding up his Marathi salutation with “Jai Maharashtra”, the Bollywood icon said his father Harivanshrai Bachchan had many friends in the Marathi literary circles and was very happy to see the Marathi translation of ‘Madhushala’ - his celebrated poetic work in Hindi.

Bachchan also recalled his own association with several distinguished Maharashtrians in different walks of life including Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray and his participation in Marathi literary meets.

In the eye of a storm following the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena questioning his commitment to Maharashtra, the superstar had said that the constitution has given every Indian the right to live and work anywhere in the country.

In the panel discussion that the channel conducted on the controversial issue, its editor Nikhil Wagle drew viewers’ attention to Bachchan’s little known gestures for Marathi individuals like ailing Dalit poet Namdeo Dhasal and films like the Oscar-nominated “Shwaas”.

Srinagar (PTI): Tulip garden, a famous tourist spot in Srinagar, has caught the imagination of Bollywood this time with film producers making enquiries about it, to project it as a possible location for silver screen movies.

Director of Floriculture G Q Naqash said at least two prominent film makers from Mumbai have been making enquiries about the possible shoot in the garden.

Named after former prime minister, the 'Indira Gandhi memorial tulip garden' is 2700 ft long and 1400 ft wide. In total, 12 lakh tulips of 60 varieties spread a rainbow of different colours in the garden.

A day after its inauguration by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi last week, the garden has landed in controversy with the Hurriyat objecting to naming the garden after Indira Gandhi.

But it did not deter tourists from visiting the garden, as it witnessed over 10,000 people during the first five days after it was thrown open to the public.

The state Governor Lt General (Retd) S K Sinha, who visited the garden, said it is yet another and significant addition to the garden enrich city of Srinagar.

The sprawling garden laid in terraces will have a water stream running in the midst of tulip beds with Zabarwan in the backyard.

The Governor was impressed by the rainbow effect of the 30 hectare garden, the home for 12 lakh tulips of 60 families (varieties)- red, orange, purple, white, pink, parrot and yellow.
