Producer Bhushan Kumar’s new film, tentatively titled DARLING, went on floors on July 11 in Mumbai. It is being directed by Ramgopal Varma. A musical-romantic thriller, the film features Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu and Esha Deol in the main lead. It has music by Himesh Reshammiya.

The entire shooting of the film will be completed in September 2006. A T-Series film, the film is presented by Gulshan Kumar.

Filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra's new project on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is in controversy. It is believed that the Congress party will be issuing a legal notice to Mundhra for the announcement of such a film without authorization of the party or its president.

Abhishek Singhvi, party spokesman and a senior advocate of the Supreme Court explained in the same notice that the party denies and challenges the accuracy of Mundhra's proposed venture. The Congress Party does not accept that it is in any manner, partially or fully, a fair or correct portrayal of its President, Sonia Gandhi.

The notice warns an appropriate legal action against Mundhra, producer Sunanda Murli Manohar and Rasheed Kidwai. However, Jagmohan Mudhra, who is in London and preparing for the same film informed that he is yet to receive any notice.

All we can say is that, with a subject that Mundhra has chosen, he should have seen this protest coming his way.

One of the keenly anticipated films of the year, DHOOM 2, has been postponed to November 24. The film was supposed to hit the screens on October 20 [Diwali week], but has been shifted to November 24 because “Aditya Chopra has decided that more time will be required for the post-production,” a statement issued by Yash Raj to this writer states.

In a telephonic conversation with this writer, Yash Raj’s Sahdev Ghai added, “Since the shooting of DHOOM 2 is still in progress at a foreign destination, it wouldn’t make sense to hurry up on the release. Hence, the postponement.”

The music launch of Vishal Bhardwaj’s OMKARA, which was scheduled for Tuesday, July 4 at J.W. Marriott, Juhu, was called off due to the heavy rains that lashed Mumbai for the second consecutive day. The music release will now take place on a latter date.

The music launch of OMKARA will coincide with prominent Overseas distributors Eros’ foray into the music industry. Eros will be releasing its music.

After wowing the audience with films like Chameli and Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi, Sudhir Mishra is currently working on his next project, Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan. He wants to cast a Pakistani actor in the lead. The reason being that the character is a hero in the 1950s. In that era, most of the heroes were from Gurdaspur or Peshawar cities of Pakistan. And hence a Pakistani actor would fit the bill.

Preferably, the actor should be well built. Also, he is required to be able to speak in Punjabi-Urdu, fluently. Mishra will visit Lahore next month to finalize the lead. Pakistani actors like Humayun Syed and Shaan are being considered. Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan have already been finalized for the project.

The Chandni Bar from Madhur Bhandarkar’s famous film with the same title will be seen in his upcoming film Traffic Signal. Traffic Signal, which is still in the making, has been in news for the real life sets of a typical Mumbai streets being built for the film by Nitin Desai. The film revolves around the life of the people living near a particular signal in the city.

Talking about the sets, Madhur said that they have built a “Chandni Bar” too on the set. However, since most of the action takes place on the streets in this film, no scenes have been shot inside the bar. Says Madhur, the suggestion to have Chandni Bar came from Nitin Desai. In fact, the writer of the film had also suggested titling the film Chandni Bar-2. Since lots of activity happens out the bar, Chandni Bar has a major role to play in Traffic Signal says Bhandarkar.

Rohit Shetty’s forthcoming comedy Golmal will be Tusshar Kapoor’s first release since Kyaa Kool Hai Hum. He plays a mute character in the film. Speaking about his sudden absence after Kya Kool Hain Hum he said “I am playing my cards very carefully. I am trying to be very choosy, careful and conscious. I don’t want to make the mistakes that I made in the past. That’s the only reason I was not in picture for some time. Now I have interesting roles to talk about.”

Apart from Golmal, Tusshar has signed in some interesting projects that include Subhash Ghai’s Good Boy Bad Boy, Sanjay Gupta’s Dus Kahaniyaan, Apoorva Lakhia’s Shoot out at Lokhandwala and Anant Mahadevan’s Agar. Now it is believed that Tusshar will play his father’s role in the remake of 1960’s super hit film Farz.

“If everything goes well then we will come out with the remake of Farz. I will be seen in my father’s role. But nothing has been confirmed yet, neither its director nor the starcast. All is in the planning stage” However he doesn’t rule out the possibility and claims, “If there ever is a remake of Farz then it will be surely only by our home production”.

Whatsoever be the box office fate of PNC films, one factor that stands out in most of them is their music. Whether it is Jhankaar Beats, Chameli, Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena or most recently Ankahee, the music has always been a high point of the enterprise. With a film starring an unlikely combination of Rahul Bose and Mallika Sherawat and belonging to a romantic comedy genre, 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects' shows good promise both from the movie and music perspective. Pritam, who has given numerous good tunes for both Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena and Ankahee recently, is the composer for PKSE that comes with a tagline 'Watch Love Crash in This Season'. Pritam's lyricist partner for number of songs, Mayur Puri, joins him for this directorial debut of Saket Chaudhary.

It's time for funk, 'masti' and 'dhoom', Pritam ishtyle, in the opening rap by Bob and Suzy for the song 'Pyar Karke'. A hip hop song with a difference, it is hardcore Punjabi track by Labh Janjua that would be primarily identifiable by the North Indian audience. But for those who frequent discs on a regular basis, language would hardly make a difference since such a number is universally accepted, whether it is up-market pubs or dance floors in USA and especially UK that are frequented by Asian community. Remix version of the track further builds up the tempo, as expected, and makes 'Pyar Karke' a fun time pass number that should keep the DJs busy for some weeks to come.

Funk continues with 'Dil Tod Ke Na Ja' that embarks a western beginning only to turn into an electronic fusion qawalli rendered by Rakesh Pandit. A singer with a strong classical base [that also reflects in the qawalli], Rakesh Pandit has earlier rendered for films like 'Kisna', 'Maqbool' and 'Ramji Londonwaley' in the capacity of a supporting singer but it is perhaps for the first time in a biggie that he has got an opportunity to sing a full fledged number. There is a remix version too that has DJ Kiran and DJ A-Myth doing the honors. There is a surprise in store as Mika, who is currently in news for all the reasons, is the singer roped in for the remix. In the end, in spite of all the efforts to create a foot tapping number with a catchy appeal, the song turns out to be just a little above ordinary but that's about it. There is a female voice in the song's background at number of places as she tries to create an enigmatic feel but that too doesn't make the song a must-listen!

A case of no credits for a voiceover is repeated in case of 'Jaane Kya' where a young female voice is heard to a considerable extent at the very beginning and then also during the flow of the track as she croons in English! Nevertheless, one moves on to hear this semi-classical/western fusion track that is a different experience and one of its kinds as it caters to classy audience. Packaged in a manner that would appeal to contemporary audience, 'Jaane Kya' may not be your next hit in the making but showcases the class of singer Zubin, composer Pritam and lyricist Mayur Puri.

From a song's title like 'Is This Love', you obviously expect a mushy outing. The context is very well set for a song belonging to the expected genre as the sound of guitar is heard for a good duration before Kunal Ganjawala strikes. Set as a simply worded number about realization of love, it is presented as a conversational number with only guitar as the accompanying partner for both Kunal and Sunidhi Chauhan, his female singing counterpart. An easy coming situational number, it should be one of the highlights of the film due to its situational and mushy nature. And yes, one does look forward to Rahul Bose acting on this song that has both Kunal and Sunidhi in top form.

'Bad Boy' appears in three versions, an original, remix [by DJ Sunil Spinz] and with a different title 'Allah Bachaye' but that hardly proves to be a deterrent as the song carries good repeat value. A hip-hop funky number with Sophie, Earl and Ishq Vector having all the fun with their rendition that carries distinct seductive overtures, it has Alisha Chinoy as the main singer who does a wonderful job once again. Lyrics that go as....

Boy: Hey girl!
Girl: Hey boy!
Boy: Would you be my baby doll!
Girl: Sure if you promise to be a bad boy!

.....hardly leave much for imagination and the message is loud and clear throughout the song as it hardly tries to be any different than it actually is! Naughty? Cheesy? Inviting? Seductive? There could be number of ways one may choose to term 'Bad Boy' but the fact cannot be denied that it is the best of the enterprise (solely from the music and rendition perspective if nothing more) and is (thankfully) reserved for the end. Truly justifying the presence of Mallika in the film, it should set the temperatures rolling if presented stylishly on screen and should be yet another good track in hand for DJs to play it for the dance floors!

Though there are a couple of numbers in the album that try to get some variety in, 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects' more or less settles down as a dance floor album that could be a welcome addition for youngsters jiving to the hip-hop beats. 'Jaane Kya' and 'Is This Love' may be fine but what should set the fire on for the youngsters are songs like 'Pyar Karke' and 'Bad Boy' that should be heard for a few weeks to come.

Prominently an urban album, it may not be hailed as one of the best by Pritam but should manage at least average sales.

Krishna must become KRRISH

If as the mentally challenged Rohit Mehra of Koi... Mil Gaya, he had you in tears, as the dashing and darling super hero Krrish, Hrithik will have you on the edge of your seats. And even as you're moved by his emotional vulnerability, you will cheer yourself hoarse for his dare devil actions. We at IndiaFM were invited for a private screening of the movie this week and here is a sneak peek into one of the most awaited movie of the year.

The movie starts with child Krishna and the reasons why Rekha takes him to the village and spreads her protective wings around her super gifted grandson. Hrithik's race with the horse in the initial reels sets the tempo for an adrenaline rush one is supposed to experience throughout the movie.

The first hour of the film is interspersed with comic scenes on how Krrish instills fear in Priya (Priyanka Chopra) and her group (while they are on a vacation in India) and later falls in love with her. Some scenes of Koi… Mil Gaya appear in a flashback to show the continuity between the two versions.

Some scenes deserve a mention here

- Krrish saving Priya in the initial reels.
- Krrish displaying his skills to collect money for the disabled girl.
- Priya asking Krrish to climb a pole faster than an Orang Utan called Mao
- The motorcycle fight sequence
- The Circus Scene

There are only four songs in the movie - two before the intermission and two afterwards. 'Dil Na Diya' stands out for its superb choreography and picturization.

And there's a surprise element as well in the movie and we are not going to reveal it... It comes as a shock to the viewer and at the point where Hrithik is at the airport, all set to return back to his village from Singapore.

The movie belongs to Hrithik Roshan from start to end. Bollywood had heroes till now. But now we have a superhero in a true Bollywood sense. Krrish proves that not all superheroes (read Spiderman, Superman etc) are made in America. India has one as well.

There is something about these small movies that makes you a little excited about them! What if these newcomers turn out to be tomorrow's superstars? What is the film turns out to be reasonably well made? What if the music is good enough to be given a second, third and many more hearings? What if....?

'Jaana-Let's Fall in Love' is one such film that somehow makes you look forward to hear its music. Call it a fresh pairing, feel good factor and some good vibes that comes on hearing a first couple of songs that are already on air! Produced by Tess Mirza, who is the man behind couple of musicals like 'Salaami' and 'Sanjay', 'Jaana – Let's Fall In Love' introduces Rehan Khan who makes his debut opposite Anjana Sukhani who has earlier been seen in films like 'Hum Dum' and 'Sun Zarra'. Directed by Shahrukh Mirza, the film is also notable due to the fact that Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman return as a pair. Another interesting factor is that as many as 6 music directors compose for the film, which means practically each of the tracks has a unique composer. Does the strategy work? Yes, indeed!

Shaan has the biggest role to play in the entire album as he gets to sing 5 out of the total 6 numbers in the film. First to come is the title song 'Jaana – Let's Fall in Love' where he pairs up with Shreya Ghoshal for a highly romantic outing. A poetic number written by Shahrukh Sultan himself and composed by Abbas Jelani, it belongs to the Chopra-Johar school of music that is a good enough point to establish the credentials of the song. A song based totally on melody, one can as well imagine the number to be picturized on a romantic hero like a Shahrukh Khan or a Saif Ali Khan. A song to cherish for repeated hearings; it is a very good start to the album and makes the listener ask for more from the remaining songs. Composer Hanif arrives with a remix version of the song and just when you would have thought that it would be one of those hurriedly done, one-beat-added-here-two-beats-added-there kind of a song, there is a surprise in store! The pace of the track remains more or less the same with the prime difference being that rhythm is added on to the melody to make the remix version a little trendier. A solo by Shaan, the song is good again and has an innocent teenage feel to it that makes you like it with a smile on the face!

Shaan continues to get everyone around him fall in love and creates a lovey-dovey mushy feel as he croons yet another solo 'Jaana – Ek Kahaani Suni'. A feel good number that is one of the best by composer duo of Anand Milind in recent times, it makes you wonder if the two would now aspire for a vacant slot that has been created by an exit of Jatin Lalit as a pair? Written by Shahrukh Sultan, it is a number that deserves a much bigger reach instead of getting lost somewhere due to lack of big names. Yet another beautiful number composed in quick succession, it would have been an ideal candidate for a Top-10 chart if only backed by a big production house and promoted aggressively. A point to note though – while Shaan does a good job, it would have made a GREAT impact if Amit Kumar would have come behind the mike for this one. It's so much tailor-made for him!

Naureen is the partner for Shaan this time around as the sound of guitar begins 'Yes I Love You'! The opening music along with the song's title makes it quiet clear that this is going to be yet another number composed for teenage love. As the lyrics arrive and Shaan and Naureen begin their crooning, you realize that 'Jaana – Let's Fall in Love' has thrown one of the biggest surprises this year with the kind of melodies that come one after another. A slow moving number with just the right pauses, rhythm and musical arrangements, it is difficult to choose if 'Yes I Love Is You' is better than the songs preceding it or vice versa. Without falling in the trap of choosing one song over other, what works better is to just fall in love with this song composed by newcomer Pramod Tripathi and written by V.K.Rawal!

A decade back Abhijeet sung 'Ole Ole'. Now it's the turn of Shaan to go 'Ola Ola' that has its opening sound of guitar straight out of a Yash Chopra film. The way Shaan goes around rendering the song; it appears to be a Jatin Lalit track all the way. Composer Guru Sharma comes up with a rhythmic campus tune that has a catchy sound of guitar accompanying the song throughout. This rhythmic song written by Shahrukh Sultan bears good quality but the impact of all the melodious songs in the past have been so tremendous that this supposedly 'stage' number comes only second to them. Now what one looks forward to is some good dance moves and an eye catchy choreography!

The longest song of the album comes in the form of 'Kalma Kalma' and it is for the first time that a male singer other than Shaan gets behind the mike. Kailash Kher is the man who croons this Sufi number that has been composed by Rajendra Shiv and written by Moied. A situational number that appears to be suited for a sad yet passionate part in the movie, it should enhance the mood of the narrative and create the desired feeling. A good way to end the album!

If there has been a musical score that has surprised this year so far, it is undoubtedly 'Jaana – Let's Fall in Love'. With Reshammiya fever all over and some of the biggies failing to create the desired impact, not many may have bothered to give the film's music a second chance. But the makers of the film have showed good trust in the six composers, each of whom come up with one of their best tunes. Now the call of the situation is a highly aggressive promotional campaign followed by good word of mouth, proper release of the film and its success at the box office that should bring this album in the limelight.

Himesh to sing the classic Mehbooba for RGV’s Sholay

The man of the moment, Himesh Reshammiya will soon have another feather under his cap! Pun, unintended! The music director cum singer has been roped in by Ram Gopal Varma for the film Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay. Not only will he be composing the music of the film, but will also be singing the timeless classic, Mehbooba Mehbooba.

And seen alongside with Himesh, onscreen will be none other than Amitabh Bachchan as Gabbar Singh. Urmila Matondkar will be seen in place of Helen. The original number was sung by R.D.Burman. RGV believes that nobody would suit RD’s voice, better than Himesh.

As of now, the film maker is in the process of completing two projects, Shiva and Nishabd.

Remember a decent comedy called 'Nayee Padosan' that came a few years back? The film was not a big success at the box office but has been enjoying satellite reruns since then. BH Tharun Kumar, director of that feel-good comic love story, is back with yet another film belonging to the same genre – 'Love Ke Chakkar Mein'. Just like 'Nayee Padosan', LKCM too boasts of a debutant pairing [Akshat Bhatia, Namita] with Rishi Kapoor as the biggest star in the film. Shoma Anand and Satish Shah form the supporting starcast while Anand Raj Anand composes for the majority of numbers with Daboo Malik and Nikhil Vinay contributing up with a song apiece. Praveen Bhardwaj and Dev Kohli share credits as the lyricists.

When an album begins with a song like 'Fat Fat Fatafat Pyaar Ho Gaya', you know that neither the music nor the film have to be taken seriously. Sunidhi Chauhan starts crooning the number with Sonu Nigam joining her in this fun number that "strangely" reminds of the numerous such love songs picturized on the pair of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Why "strangely"? Because Rishi Kapoor himself plays an integral part of the film! This Anand Raj Anand-Dev Kohli song may not be anything great to write home about but has that irritatingly catchy tune to it that makes you suddenly hum it to yourself after you have heard it a few times!

Nikhil Vinay get an opportunity to compose the title song of the film 'Love Ke Chakkar Mein' that begins on a racy note similar to the style of late 70s/early 80s. The way Farhad Bhiwaniwala goes about singing the number, you know that the song has been set in an era of feel-good light hearted films by Basu Chatterjee / Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Farhad is spirited in his rendition of this supposedly background situational piece that moves at a consistent pace with fast beats and the works and should keep the film's momentum going. If one hears closely, there are also shades of Jatin Lalit style of music in the number. This Praveen Bhardwaj written song may be forgotten after the film's run but at least manages to hold your attention while it is on.

After ARA and Nikhil Vinay, it’s the turn of Daboo Malik to make his presence felt with 'Hum They Aasmaan Pe'. Yet another old fashioned number with an easy tune, simple lyrics by Praveen Bhardwaj and a basic style of rendition by Shaan, the song just comes and goes by neither making a thumping impact nor sounding like a true disaster, as it continues in the same vein as the rest of the album.

Sunidhi Chauhan gets into a seductive mood with 'Ek Kamre Mein Hum Tum' that is written by Dev Kohli and composed by ARA. Yet another passable number [hats off to the album's consistency as far as being average is concerned!], it is, as title suggests, a song about a couple locked in a room with the girl having an 'upper hand' when it comes to taking 'initiative'. Plain average!

It comes as a relief to see Alka Yagnik's name on the credits and one gets some hopes that at least there would be one above average/memorable track in the entire album. 'Suno Na' is the song in question that turns out to be a decent melody and would be liked by those who have grabbed Anand-Milind's music when it was at its peak. What's good about this song [and rest of the numbers preceding it] that they come easy to ears with no 'shor-sharaaba,' of any sorts! If one hears the song with an unbiased approach and closes eyes to traverse to the world of music as it was a decade or so back, 'Suno Na' composed by Daboo Malik and written by Praveen Bhardwaj is not really a bad composition after all.

ARA brings the album to a close with 'Sach Hai Sanam' that is yet another song written by Praveen Bhardwaj. As the song brings the album to an end, you are sure that either the album was composed 10-15 years back or the composers have taken an extra effort to recreate the nostalgia of a decade or two back! This romantic number by Sadhna Sargam and Shaan too follows the same path and comes across as an average listenable track, though chances are near to minimal that the track would be heard for weeks to come.

As apparent while listening to the numbers, LKCM is an average score that would neither be loved nor hated. There is not a single song that has a chartbuster appeal nor is there anything that makes you look away in disgust. Now it's all on the movie [that has already been long delayed] to create its presence when it releases in a few days from now.

The international brand ‘Police,’ known for its range of sunglasses has signed up Neha Dhupia to endorse its range of watches and steel jewellery. Neha will be the ambassador for the brand in India. This is the first time that Neha will be an ambassador for a brand.

The ad campaign is shot by lensman Ashok Salian. During the shoot at his Mahim studio, Neha was very relaxed despite the summer heat and seemed to enjoy shooting with Salian and squash player Ritwik Bhattacharya, who happens to be the male face of the brand in India.

The campaign is said to be having an international look and like its international ads, it will also have red as the dominant color. Neha says that Salian is a very talented photographer and is therefore looking forward at the campaign.

Looks like the combo star power of Aamir Khan and Kajol is doing its magic even before the release of Fanaa. Looking at their onscreen chemistry and hype about the film, some of the foreign promoters have signed the two up to do a series of stage shows in the US. It is said that the two have been paid big bucks to be a part of the concerts. Something which apparently made Aamir Khan change his decision which initially was no. Incidentally, even Ajay Devgan will be going for the concert but as a chief guest. He won’t be performing on stage. Kajol is also planning to take her daughter along for the tour. So the whole concert will be more like an outing for the Devgans.

Rakhi Sawant is someone, who somehow or the other, always finds herself in the middle of a controversy. And this time its more than one thing that has landed her in trouble. The item girl is currently performing in different parts of Maharashtra. While performing in Kolhapur on May 18, a case was registered against her for obscene costumes and gestures. She was performing in the capacity of the ambassador of a popular beer brand.

Justifying her stand, Rakhi said that she had no problems with being an item girl. In fact, the costume that she wore was provided by the show's organisers.

That's not all. She is also in trouble for performing on two T-Series numbers, Dus and Zinda Hoon Main at Vashi on May 16. Although she has a contract with T-Series, she did not take their prior permission to perform on the above songs. So the music label has sent her a legal notice and is suing her for Rs.1 crore.

According to her contract with the company, she is not allowed to perform on any T-Series song, without the consent of the company. However, her manager denied any such charges.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate is one of the most awaited films of the years. Apart from having a novel theme it also boasts of a star cast comprising of Bipasha Basu, Kay Kay Menon, Samir Dattani, Minnisha Lamba, Raj Babbar and Bharat Dhabolkar. Not many know but another name in the list includes film-maker Ashok Pandit who had last directed Sheen. Pandit plays the role of a journalist who interviews Manoj Joshi – a film director on the sets of his film. “It is a hilarious comic scene”, says the cheerful director.

But that is not all. Pandit’s son Raj has been roped in to enact a role in Bhandakar’s new film Signal. “He plays the son of the owner of an Irani restaurant and it is a very important role in the film.” On questioning him further he said, “You won’t believe it but he bagged the role by imitating Madhur on his face. He acted exactly like him – his speech and body language. Madhur was impressed and signed him up.”

Now that’s a new talent to look out for. Wishing the father-son duo success in both their individual films!

OK, one of Europe’s most popular magazines will soon be launching its Indian version. And seen on the cover of its first edition will be none other than Shilpa Shetty. While Vikram Bawa will be photographing Shilpa, the clothes will be done by Rocky S. The photographs promise to be very different from what Shilpa has done, earlier. She will be posing more as a model, than as an actress.

A variety of different locations were zeroed in on. The indoor shoot has Shilpa posing on a couch, floor and even in a bathtub. Outdoors, they shot in a park and by a poolside. Another one of the photographs has her wearing a fiery red dress and posing on a luggage trolley. Seeing Shilpa’s past photographs, we’re sure this magazine edition will be nothing short of a collector’s item!

Called ‘King of Pakistani Pop’, Shehzad Roy was in India from April 25 to 27 to promote his latest album Salli. With his boyish good looks and his deep commitment to a cause, Shehzad Roy is one of the most exciting people on the Pakistan entertainment scene.

Hailing from Karachi, Pakistan, Shehzad became a star with his boisterous and revolutionary approach to Pakistani Pop with the smash-hit Pakistani single, ‘Nazrein jo milti...’ that became an instant chart-topper.His first album Zindagi (1995), featuring the hit singles ‘Dholna...’ and ‘Bewafa...’ sold more than 600,000 copies.

Shehzad’s ability to compose the most melodious romantic pop in the local music arena grew even stronger as he proved with his successive albums, Darshan (1997) and Teri Soorat (1999). Both these albums performed impressively well in Pakistan and abroad.In his 2002 offering Rab Janey he continued his effort to convey meaningful messages through his light-hearted yet earthy tunes, the very first track featuring a duet with India’s Sukhbir Singh called ‘Jinna kar logay pyar...’.

Shehzad grew up listening to classical performers like Abida Parveen and Reshma. The traditional heritage and folk influence are the most prominent features of his work. Be it Ustad Salamat Ali’s flute rendering in Bewafai, the contemporary qawwali flavour of Darshan or the very latest, traditional Siraiki folk-inspired ‘Jan gayo...’ from Rab Janey, Shehzad’s work strongly advocates his inclination towards Eastern symphonies. Yet, he identifies the ‘guitar’ as the love of his life and as the major driving force behind his coming into this profession.

Commenting on his music, the musician with a knack for experimentation asserts, “We grow from experience. My music is always changing and in constant evolution. My first album is completely different from my last album. I just follow my own taste in music.” And as experience has taught all of us, his fans are sure to follow.

In the first-ever IM Video Awards held in Karachi, Shehzad Roy won the award for the Best Performance by an Artist in a Video for the song `Salli...’ while Ali Azmat and Ali Zafar were also in the nomination list. He also won the Viewers’ Choice Award for the highly contested Best Male Singer category beating heavyweights Ali Azmat (Junoon), Ali Zafar, Najam Shiraz and Fakhir.

“In my opinion the authenticity of the message (in a song) is as consequential as anything else in producing meaningful music,” says Shehzad.

In addition to being a prodigy with his voice, Shehzad has been dedicated to Zindagi Trust, the NGO born out of his passion for helping impoverished and uneducated children. He says, “I feel so sad when I see a child working on the streets instead of going to school. The Trust is my best effort to do something about that.”

Recently, Shehzad was awarded the prestigious Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, and he is the youngest person and the only pop singer to be honoured by this prestigious presidential recognition of efforts to help the impoverished in Pakistani society.

Shehzad’s music videos always carry a streak of distinction and reflect his flair for visual inventiveness. They usually have a very exotic feel to them, as Shehzad is very particular about the storyline and the scenic locations.

Salman goes back to court

Bad boy Salman Khan has again taken a drive to court, but this time the situation is the other way round. Salman is the

complainant and has filed a case against the directors of Cinevistas Ltd. The matter is that, Cinevista had signed up Salman

for their film Garv - Pride and Honour which released two years ago. Salman though, is still not paid the amount of Rs. 26.42

lakhs by the production house and all the prior checks given to him were dishonored by the bank as the payment was been

blocked by the drawer.

Salman had served a legal notice to Cinevista and its directors under section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act on August 6th

last year. The matter finally came up for hearing on Thursday before a city magistrate.

Actress Meera Vasudevan of Rules: Pyaar Ka Superhit Formula fame finds herself in a bit of a spot. The producer of her latest

film Jaadu Sa Chal Gaya, Yogesh B Verma has sent her a legal notice and wants to claim damages amounting to Rs.1 crore.

The film stars Rakesh Bapat, Sudhanshu Pandey and Meera Vasudevan and is scheduled for release on May 26.

According to the producer, Meera was extremely unprofessional. She has not completed the dubbing of the film and was also

not available for the promotions. The producer had requested her to be present at the promotional functions but she just didn't

turn up. In fact, she kept the media waiting. Verma was shocked by her behavior since she is not even an established star.

The film's release date was postponed and the producer had to bear losses worth Rs.1 crore. So he has decided to claim

damages. He has also complained about her to the United Film Producers Association. The association will look into the

matter.

It was in Bandra at Media Minds studio where our Munnabhai Sanjay Dutt and his partner in crime, Arshad Warsi landed for their next quest. The duo under the guidance of composer Shantanu Moitra and director Rajkumar Hirani, were recording a song for Munnabhai 2nd Innings.

Sanju Baba was in a very relaxed mood, wearing a black jazzy t-shirt with matching track pants and sporting a short hair. Arshad Warsi too was dressed in black. The duo seem to get along equally well off-screen. Throughout the recording of the song, they kept the studio atmosphere lively with their jokes and talks. At the same time doing the job of singing. The track being recorded, as expected, seems to be a tapori number.

First quarter of 2006 has been simply phenomenal for Bollywood lovers! Number of music albums ranging from 'Rang De Basanti', 'Aksar', 'Gangster', 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye', 'Tom Dick and Harry', '36 China Town', 'Fanaa' and many more have turned out to be super successful. Now add 'Krrish' to the list! Rajesh Roshan, who more or less selectively works for his brother's films now, composes for 'Krrish' and results are there to be seen....yet again! Nasir Faraaz writes three songs while Ibraheem Ashq and Vijay Akela chip in with a song apiece.

Shreya Ghoshal, who has fast become a favorite amongst the composers looking for a sweet-n-simple voice, sings as many as three out of five prime tracks in the album. Melodious to the core, the way Sonu Nigam begins singing 'Pyaar Ki Ek Kahani'; it seems tailor-made for Shahrukh Khan himself. This is undoubtedly one of the best rendered songs of Sonu after the brilliance he showed in the title song of 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. There are slight shades of 'Usse Hasna Bhi Hoga, Usse Rona Bhi Hoga' from the title song of Salman-Rani-Preity starrer 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega' when the lines 'Wo Bhi Hansne Lahi Thi, Ye Bhi Hasne Laga Tha; Dono Samjhe Nahi They Wo Jo Jone laga Tha' come, but one doesn't really mind that as the song is still extremely enjoyable. Yes, it takes some time for this Ibraheem Ashq song to grow and it's only after you have heard it 5-10 times that you actually start humming it along while it is played. Along with Sonu, Shreya Ghoshal easily takes the same route as Alka Yagnik does in her romantic numbers and comes quite close to her in terms of class, quality and style. A number that should be in Top 3 charts soon!

It's time for melody to continue making its presence felt in Nasir Faraaz written 'Koi Tumsa Nahin', again a duet by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. For anyone who has been following Hindi music for last three decades, it won't require him/her to even look at the credits and still attribute the song to Rajesh Roshan. If the movie would have stuck to its original title of 'Koi..Tumsa Nahin' before moving to 'Krrish', this track would well have been the title song of the film. A trademark simple number with ear friendly musical arrangements set on a strong Indian base, it is a good fusion of 'geet' and 'ghazal' that makes it a second good song in succession. The beats are really catchy [belonging to true Rajesh Roshan style] and one can expect Hrithik to be showing his dancing prowess to a good extent. Proceedings get all jazzed up with the sound of piano, saxophone and other western classical instruments in its Big Band mix that completely changes the mood, feel and style of the track. Set as a jazz number, it is enjoyable in this new version as well!

Udit Narayan comes on the scene [for the first and the only time] in the album with 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke' that fits well with the 'hill station' setting of the movie, as far as portions shot in India are concerned. A song based on 'pahadi' music that comes to you like a cool breeze, one just falls in love with the music by Rajesh Roshan. Starting with the sound of flute, it successfully takes you to the scenic locations once you close your eyes. Third song in a row that is completely based on 'hindustani' music with zero western influences to it, 'Chori Chori' is as simple as it gets, both in terms of music and lyrics. Udit Narayan is just the perfect choice for the song while Shreya Ghoshal is extremely competent and justifies her continued presence in the big league. Nasir Faraaz comes up with simple lyrics that make the track a beautiful song to sing around, but in the end it is Rajesh Roshan who is THE person who should be attributed for making it sound extremely enjoyable and lovely.

There is an extended orchestra [set in western mode] that escalates gradually after it has begun on a near silent note and it's after a while before Rafaqat Ali Khan arrives with 'Main Hoon Wo Aasmaan'. A Nasir Faraaz song that should be picturized on the superhuman character of 'KRRISH', as conveyed by the haunting feel of the tune that slowly converges into the world of mystic! A situational theme song that has Alka Yagnik giving company to Rafaqat, it moves at an extremely slow pace and is somewhat unconventional when it comes to a typical Bollywood score. The only song in the album that sounds dull when compared to the rest of the album that has a peppy touch to it with a feel good effect, the track also appears in 'A Mystic Love Mix'. The intention is right since the film has a mystic feel to it and the song begins with an extended 'aalap' with western musical arrangements in tow hence giving it a fusion feel to it. The dullness of the original song makes way for a perky remix that turns out to be a little better and more enjoyable.

The funk of 'It's Magic [Koi...Mil Gaya]' coming close to the musical arrangement of 'Le Gayi Le Gayi [Dil To Paagal Hai]' - that's the way to describe 'Dil Na Diya'. But unlike numerous other numbers where inspiration comes quite close to copying, 'Dil Na Diya' stays away from the temptation and maintains an identity of its own. A fast dance track that is tailor-made for Hrithik to come up with his varied [and unique] dance steps, it is a simple feel good number that may not boast of extraordinary lyrics by Vijay Akela but should still do well since one can easily expect some great choreography and picturization. The song does have slight musical shades of 'Jeene Ke Bahane Lakhon Hain' from Roshan's own 'Khoon Bhari Maang' but that is more due to composer's touch rather than a copy/lift. Overall the song remains firmly rooted to melody as Kunal Ganjawala comes up with yet another spirited rendition.

Melodious, soulful, simple and belonging to the genre that appeals across the nation, the music from KRRISH is another winner in the making! Highly melodious numbers like 'Chori Chori', 'Koi Tumsa Nahi' and 'Pyaar Ki Ek Kahani' are the pick of the lot, in that order, followed by dance number 'Dil Na Diya'. A musical score that can be conveniently added to your already-piling-up-collection in 2006, the music album of 'KRRISH' is another good outing for Bollywood music lovers.

UTV is planning to dub the blockbuster hit RANG DE BASANTI in Tamil and Telugu languages. The production house is expecting to incur an expense of approx. Rs. 1.5 crores for it. Meanwhile, KRRISH will be released in Tamil and Telugu versions along with the Hindi version in June. The South territory is indeed getting hot!

Sohail Khan’s much-delayed Aryan – The Unbreakable is in controversy again. By now it’s known that singer Neha Bhasin (the singer from the VIVA band) wasn’t given her due credits for the song Ek Look Ek Look that is topping the music charts. When the music was released, producer Poonam Khubani’s name was credited as a lead singer while Neha’s name figured as a back-up singer for the song. But Neha claims that actually it was vice versa. Neha had filed a case against it and the High court has issued a stay order on the same song.

A leading newspaper also reported that a stay order has been imposed on the movie. However, executive producer, Sujit Shetty has a different story to say. Though it was reported that the Delhi high court has issued a stay order on movie Aryan – The Unbreakable, Sujit denied the reports. He said, “It has been misquoted by some newspaper. That is not true. The stay is not on movie but on the song that is in controversy. The issue is between Anand Raj Anand, music director of the movie and singer Neha Bhasin.”

He further explained that the movie will release on the same schedule that they have planned earlier. “We have nothing to do with the case. As per the court’s order we have removed that song from the film. The film will release in May”, clarifies Shetty.

Ramgopal Varma has never bowed to market diktats. The subject material of his films is offbeat most of the times. Even when it comes to casting, RGV has never chased stars. He has created them. He cast Fardeen Khan in JUNGLE after PREM AGGAN failed at the box-office. He cast a relatively new actor, Manoj Bajpai, in DAUD first and SATYA later. Stars like Aftab Shivdasani [MAST], Vivek Oberoi [COMPANY], Randeep Hooda [D] and Mohit Ahlawat [JAMES] are RGV’s discoveries.

Now RGV has cast Rakesh Nath’s [Rikku] son Karan in his new project, titled ZABARDAST. Starting as a child artist in MR. INDIA, Karan enacted lead roles in PAAGALPAN, YEH DIL AASHIQANA, SSSSHHH and TUM. With ZABARDAST, Karan reappears on the screen with renewed vigor. Directed by Prawal Raman, who directed DARNA MANA HAI, GAYAB and a segment in DARNA ZAROORI HAI, the film has already completed a 10-day shooting schedule.

Reportedly, the makers were keen to call the film BOXER initially. Is it based on the life of a boxer? “That was a working title. Its ZABARDAST now,” Prawal clarifies, “ZABARDAST has nothing to do with boxing. All I can divulge at this juncture is that it’s a love story woven with thrills and light moments.”

Co-starring in ZABARDAST are Nisha Kothari, Ninad Kamat, Ishrat Ali and Sharat Saxena. The film should hit the screens in September.

Yeh hya ho raha hain? Two weeks ago, Madhur Bhandarkar registered the title CHANDNI BAR 2. Now Bhandarkar has registered the title PAGE 3 – PART 2. What’s happening? “My company decided to register this title [PAGE 3 – PART 2]. That doesn’t mean I am making the film,” the film-maker smiles.

But the rumor mills are agog with speculation that he is keen to cast Kareena Kapoor in the film. In fact, Kareena was initially offered PAGE 3, but the actress turned down the offer due to date hassles. “Let’s get this straight. I haven’t met Kareena or any actress for this project. Like I said, I’ve merely registered the title, I may/may not make the film. Similarly, I have registered three more titles [all from newspaper headlines], but that doesn’t mean I am making all those films,” he adds.

With CORPORATE slated for July release and SIGNAL being readied for Diwali 2006 release, Bhandarkar is working on his next venture. “Yes, I am working on something different this time,” he reveals.

Three years ago, Ramgopal Varma triggered off an experiment. He combined six different stories in one film called DARNA MANA HAI. Continuing with the 'Darna' series, he narrates six different stories once again in his new outing DARNA ZAROORI HAI. The difference this time is that the six stories are directed by six different directors, unlike the first attempt that had one director [Prawal Raman] calling the shots.

Tales about the unknown and the mysterious always hold an attraction for the audience. But for any horror film to scare the living daylights out of the viewer, it ought to be embellished with blood curdling and spine chilling stories. That's the prime area where DARNA ZAROORI HAI falters.

Of the six stories that are juxtaposed in the new 'Darna' exercise, only one comes across as an eerie experience [Randeep Hooda, Zakir Hussain; dir.: Chekeravarthy], while two pass muster [Anil Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat; dir.: Jijy Philip / Arjun Rampal, Bipasha Basu, Makrand Deshpande; dir.: Prawal Raman]. The remaining three stories and also the story that binds them in a thread, of an old woman and five children, try hard to terrify and frighten the viewer, but in vain.

Let's get this straight. 'Scary' is too strong a word for DARNA ZAROORI HAI. The film doesn't even succeed in sending a slight shiver down your spine. Coming from the maker of spell-binding horror stories like RAAT and BHOOT, DARNA ZAROORI HAI is as forgettable as a week-old newspaper.

Story 1

Actor: Manoj Pahwa. Director: Sajid Khan.
Pahwa is a film buff. He watches every new release in the night show on the first day itself. Just as he readies himself to visit a nearby theatre to catch the new release DARNA MANA HAI, his mother cautions him against taking the route via the graveyard. Pahwa dismisses his mother's plea since he doesn't believe in ghosts. On his way back, he dies of cardiac failure outside the graveyard.

An interesting story, it keeps your interest alive till Pahwa decides to take the same route on his way back. The sequences in the theatre are hilarious. But the culmination to the plot is hardly scary. Ideally, the story could've done with a fear-provoking end. Pahwa works, but the story doesn't. Sajid shows signs of a fine director.

Story 2

Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh. Director: Ramgopal Varma.
An aged professor [Bachchan] believes there's someone in his house. At times, the 'invisible person' rushes to the kitchen. Sometimes, he makes himself comfortable on the chair. Is the professor hallucinating? The professor tries to explain the situation to his student [Ritesh], who revolts and in fact advices him to seek psychiatric help. The 'invisible man' finally appears in the mirror.

Technically, this isn't a scary story; it has more of shock-value. Also, it doesn't create much of an impact. It tries to build the tension, but to no avail. The only time you get a jolt is when the 'invisible man' appears in the mirror. Bachchan and Ritesh are sincere, but RGV's choice of the story is a downer.

Story 3

Actors: Arjun Rampal, Bipasha Basu, Makrand Deshpande. Director: Prawal Raman.
One fateful night, a stranger [Arjun] knocks on the doors of a secluded bungalow. His car has had a breakdown, he needs a mechanic, he ought to make a phone call. The couple [Bipasha, Makrand] living in this house is eccentric. Both constantly try to scare Arjun. When Arjun states that he doesn't believe in ghosts and spirits, Makrand decides to call the spirits. There's a knock on the door and the spirit refuses to go back.

The story has its moments. In fact, there are times when the viewer gets startled. Even the culmination to the story is unexpected. But the problem is that it takes too much time to reach the peak. Arjun is quite effective, while Bipasha and Makrand are satisfactory. Prawal's storytelling is better this time.

Story 4

Actors: Suniel Shetty, Sonali Kulkarni, Rajpal Yadav. Director: Vivek Shah.
A Maharashtrian couple [Suniel, Sonali] have an unexpected visitor in the form of a weird salesman [Rajpal Yadav]. He claims to be an insurance agent, but in actuality he's a thief who wants to rob the couple. In the melee that follows, Rajpal pulls the trigger of the pistol and bang!

Hello, how did this story merit a place in a horror film? Nothing wrong with the story per se, but the writer should be reminded that this is a horror film. In actuality, this one only carries a simple message: Never let a stranger in. Even Suniel and Rajpal's decent work fail to infuse life.

Story 5

Actors: Anil Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat. Director: Jijy Philip.
A leading film-maker [Anil] wants to change lanes. After making a couple of family dramas, he is keen to make a horror film next. He decides to write the concluding portions of his script at his bungalow in Khandala. En route, he spots a lone lady [Mallika] and offers to give her a lift till Khandala. When they reach the film-maker's bungalow, the lady tells him that she's a ghost who had died on the Mumbai-Pune highway.

The conversation between Anil and Mallika in the car first and sequences in the bungalow next are involving. The story holds your attention till Mallika reveals her gameplan, of wanting to kill Anil. But the moment she reveals the truth -- she's only an aspiring actress, trying to impress the film-maker to bag the assignment -- the viewer is left with the feeling that the director has taken him [viewer] for a ride. Anil is passable, while Mallika is efficient. Jijy is letdown by the writing!

Story 6

Actors: Randeep Hooda, Zakir Hussain, Rasika Joshi. Director: Chekeravarthy.
On a rainy night, a young man [Randeep] accidentally bumps into a woman. He is petrified. The next morning, when he opens his eyes, he finds himself in the police lock-up. He is accused of murdering a man. He claims he's innocent. The cop [Zakir] refuses to buy the story. The mother of the victim [Rasika] arrives at the police station. And skeletons tumble out of the cupboard.
Truly, the best story of the enterprise. The entire track keeps you on the edge. The lengthy conversation between Randeep and Rasika first and Zakir and Rasika subsequently is brilliant. Chekeravarthy is in full form. Randeep, Zakir and Rasika excel.

Story 7

The old lady and five children. Director: Manish Gupta.
Five kids take shelter in a dilapidated bungalow. There's an old woman in the house. She starts narrating stories. Slowly, the kids die of shock one after the other. Without doubt, the worst part of the enterprise. Unimaginative writing, lackluster direction.

On the whole, DARNA ZAROORI HAI lacks the power to scare, frighten, terrify and petrify. In fact, it's as ineffectual as its predecessor DARNA MANA HAI. At the box-office, a major disappointment!

The past few days have been like a dream come true for director Kunal Kohli. For, he got to direct his favorite star, Amitabh Bachchan! Unfortunately, it was not a full length film, but a commercial for the suiting brand Reid and Taylor, which Big B endorses. Nonetheless, Kunal was quite excited about the project. Like many others, he too has grown up watching Mr. Bachchan.

Talking about his experience, he said that Amitabh Bachchan is the most down-to-earth person. They even discussed films on the sets. Kohli hopes to direct the superstar one day, in a full length movie, when he has a suitable script.

Prior to this commercial, Kohli has directed two other ads. One was with Saif Ali Khan and the other was with Ajay and Kajol Devgan. However, he does not want to go overboard, directing ads. Although, it is quick money, he wants to direct them only when the ad’s sensibilities match with his.

In a very unlikely combination, Ekta Kapoor and Sanjay Gupta will be coming together to produce films. The films will be under the banner of White Feather Films, in association with Balaji.

The two had a meeting last month after which, the deal came through. Not only does Ekta like Gupta’s style of film-making, but also thinks that she gets along with him, very well. They believe that with this association, both of them can bring in their strong points and nullify the weaknesses. He feels that it will definitely benefit the growth of both the companies. White Feather Films has already decided on 10 subjects, which will be launched in the near future. While a number of film directors shoot ad films from time to time, director Apoorva Lakhia recently shot a music video for pop singer Tarina in Mauritius. It stars singer-cum-model Ajay. There is even a Hindi version of the song by Gayatri Ganjawala and Arya.

The entire shoot lasted 2 days. The video which showcases the beautiful beaches of Mauritius has a mood somewhat similar to Right Here Right Now from Bluffmaster.

Apart from this video what’s keeping Apoorva busy these days is his forthcoming film Shootout At Lokhandwala, starring Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Tusshar Kapoor, Viveik Oberoi, Emraan Hashmi and others. Since, it is based on a real life incident, extensive research was required for the subject. The shooting will begin in August. Film maker Vipul Shah is currently in the process of finalizing the cast for his next film, Namaste London. The latest update is that Shah is in talks with Sean Connery’s son for a role in the film. When we spoke to him, he told us that nothing has been confirmed yet. “Things abroad work differently. There are various agents in London who we are in talks with. We are looking at the option of casting Sean Connery’s son, Jason. I am going to London on the 30th of April. Only the audition will determine whether or not Jason is suitable for the role.”

The actors who have already been signed on for the project include Akshay Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Upen Patel. So who will we see opposite Upen? “We are still looking for a suitable actress opposite Upen. It will be an Indian actress,” said the film maker.

A romantic film, it promises to be technically up-to-the mark as well. Shah hopes to finalize all his technicians during his visit to London. The music will be composed by Himesh Reshammiya.

I.I.F.A. has always hosted the world premiere of a keenly-anticipated film year after year. From LAGAAN to YUVA to ARMAAN

to PARINEETA, the global premiere of the film is a looked-forward-to event. And if the grapevine is to be believed, Rakesh

Roshan’s KRRISH might be premiered in Dubai this year.

“Nothing is confirmed,” Sabbas Joseph, one of the organizers of I.I.F.A., enlightens me, “We haven’t penciled on any film yet.

Of course, we are in talks with various producers, but the official announcement will be made once we finalize the film.”

However, the creator of KRRISH, Rakesh Roshan, feels that his film wouldn’t be ready by mid-June, so as to have its premiere

at I.I.F.A. “Since I.I.F.A. is taking place from June 14-16, I will have to ready the film much before the scheduled dates, which

is next to impossible. As a result, KRRISH will not be premiered at I.I.F.A. for this reason,” Roshan Sr. informs me.

Nonetheless, Roshan Sr. is firm on a June release for the film. “KRRISH is definitely arriving in June, that’s for sure. But I’ve yet

to confirm the date,” he adds.

Suneel Darshan is going global! He has decided to put up a stall at the famed Cannes Film Festival and showcase his

catalogue to the world market.

“A majority of my films have done remarkable business in Britain, South Africa, Gulf and Fiji. If the films can prove lucrative

business propositions in these countries, I am sure the rest of the world will embrace my cinema with equal enthusiasm. In

fact, the success of my last few films in the Overseas territory has propelled me to take my catalogue to Cannes and explore

territories that were hitherto unexplored by Hindi film-makers,” Suneel reveals.

Suneel’s critics strongly feel that his films tackle traditional Indian themes, for which he has received a fair amount of criticism

too. “Criticism doesn’t bother me. I am going to Cannes to promote my cinema. With the world slowly waking up to Bollywood,

I want to give them a taste of traditional Indian cinema. What’s the harm if I do so?” he asks.

After making a series of films with Akshay Kumar, Suneel is now promoting Bobby Deol in a big way. “You’ll agree that

Bobby’s market in the Overseas territory was quite low before BARSAAT and DOSTI. These two films changed Bobby’s

fortunes, so much so that a HUMKO TUMSE PYAAR HAI has also enjoyed a good run in U.K., faring much better than films

like FAMILY, ZINDA and even TAXI NO. 9211. Bobby’s work has also caught the attention of Aditya Chopra, who has also

signed him for one of his forthcoming films,” he states.

There’s talk that Suneel has once again roped in Bobby for his next venture, which will witness the actor portraying a negative

role. Co-starring in the film is the new kid on the block, Upen Patel. “I wouldn’t like to reveal much at this juncture since I am
